Lessons Learned: tlp.hn is up!

Seen our new short URL? That’s right! It’s customized now!

It’s taken us a few days to settle on just the right short URL, and now that we’ve got it all set up, seeing our short URLs customized is giving us that warm fuzzy feeling!

We would like to share with you the steps we did just in case you are interested in setting up your own.

Steps it took to get there:

1. Choose the short URL that fits your brand and brand name:

Take a look at your brand name and start from the end. Optionally, remove vowels. Here’s a link to a list of all domain name extensions to get you started. Our best fit was ‘.hn’, which is the domain extension of Honduras. Exotic, right?

Note that not all domain registrars offer all domain extensions, so make sure you choose a domain registrar that is accredited to sell domains with the extension you choose. Also, if the extension you choose is not ‘.com’ or ‘.net’, it might take the domain registrar up to 24 hours to complete registration.

2. Your short URL in hand and back to your URL shortener:

Services such as bit.ly and aw.sm give you the possibility to set your own custom short URL. We’re using bit.ly pro BETA, which allows using custom short URLS, and it’s free.

Note that URL shorteners usually specificy two steps to complete before you’re all set. If you’re not much into networking, get someone to help you set up the following:

3. Set up a DNS A Record:

This is done via your short URL domain registrar to point to an IP (format: xxx.xxx.xxx.xx) so that your URL shortener (in our case, bit.ly) can track the clicks. The URL shortener provides you with the IP.

4. Add the few lines of code they provide you with to your actual website (in our case, telephone.com) so as to prove website ownership.

And that’s it, you’re done! Seeing your short URL customized is well worth the effort!

Isn’t Honduras beautiful?

GeekFest Beirut on May 2010

Telephone.com logoGeekFestBeirut

We were very glad to participate GeekFestBeirut 2.0, which took place on Saturday May 29th at Art Lounge. We really enjoyed working alongside the Maniachi team, and would like to extend a big thank you to all those of you who attended.

The event involved many presentations, including a presentation by very zestful college students taking a course entitled ‘Media, Culture, and Technology’, and another by a member of our Telephone.com Team!

This year, GeekFest took on a mission; all proceeds from tshirt sales, as well as donations, went to an impressive online campaign with a very noble cause, ‘Un Coeur pour Philippe’, literally translating into ‘A Heart for Philippe’.

Check out the Maniachi’s post about GeekFest Beirut!

Here are a few pictures we would like to share with you:
